What an incredible night it was for Club Director Joshua and his Point Grey Senior Girls, who secured their second consecutive and third overall VSSAA Championship Finals victory. The team triumphed over Kitsilano in a four-set thriller, with HVC athletes representing both sides of the court. Point Grey’s lineup included Alana Zeng, Eva Raskob, and Elle Suelzle, while Kitsilano featured Madeleine Sung and Mekaella Ashlie—all of whom were part of the HVC Maples 16U roster last club season. The journey, however, wasn't always smooth for Point Grey. In 2021, Point Grey began establishing dominance in the district, defeating Kitsilano during their bantam season with impressive physicality and height. At that time, many of the athletes hadn’t yet joined club volleyball, and the starting lineup included only four club players. The following season brought new challenges, as the team decided to compete at the Junior level. They faced a more experienced Kitsilano team in the semifinals, ultimately leading to a tough defeat and costing them a repeat appearance in the VSSAA finals. This loss inspired many athletes on the roster who hadn’t yet played club to try out, with a shared goal of improving and giving the team a chance at reclaiming the VSSAA title. After that setback, 2023 marked a fresh start for the team. They established clear dominance throughout the season, went on a playoff run without dropping a single set, and ultimately secured their second VSSAA finals title. The team also competed at the Junior Girls Provincial Championships, placing an impressive 9th overall. This year’s season brought even more success for Point Grey. Once again, the team asserted its dominance, now with the addition of two freshmen to the roster. Throughout the season, they consistently ranked in the province’s top 10, defeating strong teams such as AA-ranked #1 Notre Dame in the Douglas College Royal Rumble Tournament. Yesterday, they secured their second consecutive victory—a historic achievement for Point Grey’s athletics program. Now, the team looks ahead to the zone playoffs, where they will face other top-ranked teams like LFA, Crofton, and defending zone champions Sentinel. They’re eager for the opportunity to capture Point Grey’s first-ever zone title. Stories like these are why Hustle was created—to provide opportunities for those who are driven to compete and win. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) How do I know which age group to try out for? Athletes typically play within their designated age group based on their birth year. For example, athletes born in 2011 will play in the 14U age group. However, Volleyball BC allows athletes born after September 1st to play down one age group if desired. Can my child play up an age group? In some cases, athletes may be allowed to compete in a higher age group based on advanced skills, social maturity, physical capability, or other factors. Requests to play up must be submitted to a Hustle coach or club official at least one week before tryouts. What is the withdrawal policy? Once a player commits to the team and club fees are paid, no refunds will be issued if the athlete withdraws from the season. This policy ensures that the club can allocate resources efficiently. --- Stay tuned for more updates, and we look forward to seeing you at tryouts! Let’s Hustle! 💪 #HustleVolleyball #Tryouts2024 #JoinTheTeam This past weekend, athletes from eight zones across British Columbia competed to determine which team would come out on top. One of our standout HVC athletes, Amber Lau, represented Zone 4 (Fraser River) and won gold at the BC Summer Games. We are thrilled to congratulate her on this incredible achievement, especially as it comes in her very first year of club volleyball. Our club director, Joshua Dang, served as the assistant coach for the Team BC Zone 5 (Vancouver Coastal) girls team. After a closely contested loss against Zone 3 (Fraser Valley) in the quarterfinals, the team bounced back to win their match against Zone 7, securing a tie for 5th place. Congratulations to the following athletes who received an award at our banquet!
